My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

Ecclesiastes 3

A time for everything

Everything happens in due course. Death, life; hate, love; happiness, unhappiness. Everything, though is beautiful in its time.

Talking of time, we all have eternity on our hearts, but God doesn't let us grasp it!

What God does, lasts.

We're just like animals. Nothing says our spirit goes anywhere other than where the spirits of animals go.

Key verses:
8. a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.
11. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men
20. all come from dust, and to dust all return.

My thoughts:
This is a very famous chapter and it is often quoted.

I find verse 21 interesting, because it shows a clear knowledge of the concept of an afterlife, but just doesn't say that there is one. It is perhaps influences by other dualistic understandings of nature, where the spirit and body are entirely separate.

A time for everything aye? It's perhaps sometimes hard to see a time for hate. I can imagine this chapter has been used by libertines to justify their actions.
