My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

Daniel 4

Nebuchadnezzar goes crazy

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream of a massive tree which everything lived under, which he wanted Daniel to interpret. Then, in the dream, an angel came and declared that the tree was to be chopped down and that he was to become like an animal. It meant that Nebuchadnezzar would lose his power and become like an animal for a time, so that he would know that God is God, and then he would be restored. God left the stump.

A year later when Nebuchadnezzar was boasting about his acheivements, all this happened, and stopped seven years later when he glorified God.

Key verse:
27. Therefore, O king, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue.

My thoughts:
This reads like a conversion experience for the Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzar, and the precise details of it (ie. that is was actually written by Nebuchadnezzar himself) does, admittedly seem unlikely. The simpler explanation, I guess, would point to this as more Jewish propaganda, if you like. Who knows though.

The point is clear. God is bigger than any king or empire.
