My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

Malachi 1

Blemished sacrifices

Summary:
God loved Jacob, but hated Esau. So Edom may try to rebuild, but God will demolish. God influences beyond just Israel!

The priests have shown God contempt by bringing flawed sacrifices. They better start begging for mercy! It would be better if they didn't even use the temple! God is great and will be worshiped everywhere by all people.

God deserves your best, not your leftovers.

Key verse:
8. When you sacrifice crippled or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?" says the Lord Almighty.

My thoughts:
It's true that sometimes we think of God on another level as we think of people around us. We might think "What's so wrong with doing a ritual sacrifice of an animal with blemishes?", but if you think of it as terms of an offering that we are giving someone, our perspective changes. You wouldn't give rotting meat to someone. When we worship God, it might be helpful to think - "Would a person accept this praise?". God is more than just a person, but if we give our offerings as if we were truly giving them to a person, then they'll be more genuine.

Pete:
God is more than just a person

Deane:
Yes. He is three persons.

Heheh... I was actually thinking that as I wrote that.

Deane, you do realise that you are writing something Orthodox? Are you ok with that?
