My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

Matthew 19

Sex, kids, and money

They tried to trick Jesus by asking him if people could divorce. He went further than Moses by saying that people should not separate what God has put together. It was a hard teaching.

Jesus let the nice wee kids come to him.

A rich man wanted to know how to get to heaven. He'd followed all the 'good' rules, so Jesus told him to sell everything and give it to the poor, which he wasn't willing to do. Jesus said it was impossible for the rich to enter heaven, but what is impossible for people is sweet as for God.

Anyone who has left their family for God would enter God's kingdom though.

Key verse:
6. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.

My thoughts:
Marriage (ie. sex) is a very spiritual thing. If can't just be thrown around. Even if somehow all the emotional and physical damage could be avoided in a separation, the spiritual damage is still very real and can only be healed directly by God.

Notice how Jesus only asks the rich man about the secular laws. Why? I'm suggesting that it's because he was humouring the man somewhat. The man was asking about being good. It's clear his interest was in being good, rather then following his Creator. Ultimately this is at the heart of his problem.
