My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

Matthew 6

An audience of one

Summary:
Give in secret. Seek reward from God alone.
Pray simply and only for God's benefit, not for the ears of people. Praise him, ask him for provision and forgiveness. Don't expect forgiveness if you don't forgive yourself.
Fast in a way that no-one can tell.
Wealth in heaven lasts forever. Wealth here will not last.
Don't stress. God looks after all the animals which don't stress, and if you seek him he'll look after you too. Don't worry.

Key verse:
33. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

My thoughts:
This verse is one of my favourites in the whole Bible. I think it encapsulates the entire heart of this chapter. Don't do things to please people, but focus on God. It's easy to see when you are caught up in religion, when you are trying to please people rather than God. Make him the first priority, and everything else will work itself out.

Jesus constantly and consistently refers to God as Father. Though this concept is not unknown in early Judaism, it is unique that Jesus uses it so personally for himself and for us and so frequently.
