My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

John 17

Jesus praying

Jesus prayed to be glorified.

Jesus prayed for his disciples, that they be in the world but protected from Satan's attacks, that they be sent out like Jesus was, that they would know the truth.

Jesus prayed that all believers would be unified.

Key verse:
22. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one

My thoughts:
It appear that we haven't been very good at keeping unified. We even have many denominations of denominations. Oh well. The reality is that structural unity isn't going to happen any time soon, even if the RC church and the Eastern Orthodox somehow combine. What is more important is a unity of heart which is present amongst many evangelical Christians.

Here's the truth. People always have enemies. If there are a lot of non-Christians/other religions around, then Christians will bind together and be unified. If, however, pretty much everyone is Christian, then they will fight amongst themselves. It's like the ancient Greeks. They fought themselves until someone bigger came along, when they fought together.

Notice how Jesus prays from himself outwards.
