My daily exploration of the Bible, taking it one chapter at a time. If I do it everyday, it'll take 1189 days.

Romans 12

Living the sacrifice

So let your life be an offering to God as your worship. Don't follow this world's lead, but God's will. Be humble in your own opinion. We're all parts of the same body, with different roles and gifts, be they prophesy, serving, treaching, giving, mercy or whatever.

Have genuine love for one another. Be good to all, even if it isn't returned. Don't be too cool. All do right and be seen to do right. Don't seek revenge. God'll sort that out. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Key verses:

2. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

5. in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

My thoughts:

So this is basically a chapter on how to live as a Christian. Paul urges us to be living sacrifices, and opposed to the normal dead ones at the temple. He then goes on to describe how we are like this, and basically we are to be humble, loving, and not vengeful. The whole talk of gifts is purely in the context of explaining that for all our gifts and abilities, we are all just cogs in the deep clockwork of Christ. I'm not really convinced that there's really a Biblical distinction between abilities and spiritual gifts. It's all mixed together like a good trifle with mince and everything. Anyway, lots of good philiosophies on which to base your life here.

Oh, and also! Don't conform! Just don't. Be really really noticably different as a Christian. Don't try to be relevant. Try to follow God.

In verse 3 Paul makes a quadruple pun on "minded". Most translations obscure it. This translation (Alford) brings it out:

'For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to be high-minded above that which he ought to be minded, but to be so minded as to be sober-minded ...'
